In our next Pinwheeler Spotlight, Caroline Lo, a Software Engineer, talks about her journey from college to Pinwheel and the impact of working on a small team.
What is your job title?
Software Engineer
What are some of your key objectives right now?
Writing and maintaining integrations! I write new ones in order to improve our coverage and fix them as they error to help our conversion.
What drew you to your field?
I was a Computer Science major in college but I wasn’t necessarily motivated to pursue Software Engineering after I graduated. In my last semester, I took this class where the only goal was to use software to make our client’s life easier. My client was a behavioral therapist who treated children on the autism spectrum and so I built a virtual reality game that she could use when she was working with her patients. Being able to see that project from start to finish and see what I could do as a software engineer to create a real impact on people really sold it for me.
What have been your favorite things about working at a startup?
Definitely the culture. I think that working with this size of a team allows you to become a lot closer with your coworkers. And not only does it make work more fun, but it makes it so much easier to ask questions and collaborate and learn. I have learned more from my coworkers in this past year than I ever could have trying to learn it on my own. Being able to collaborate with them has been amazing.
What Pinwheel value resonates most with you and why?
We Not Me! The fact that I feel comfortable reaching out to anyone in the company, whether I have a question or need to collaborate on a project, or if I just want to talk, is a super unique experience for any company.
What's the most gratifying part of your job?
Seeing the first success come in on a particularly hard to write integration is one of the best feelings in the world!
What do you like most about having a hybrid work environment?
I love the flexibility!! I love coming into the office when I'm in New York but since I'm from the west coast it's nice being able to spend long periods of time there with my family and being able to work from home!
What do you like to do when you aren't working?
Eating! Everything! I love exploring new places in New York through restaurants and food.
Favorite Slack channel?
#pop-culture :)
